Losing the Double Chin: What are My Options?

The dreaded double chin. It sneaks up on millions of men and women every year, and you don’t have to be overweight to have one. Submental fullness (fat below the chin) can be caused by genetics, the aging process, and yes, significant changes in weight. Excess fat beneath the chin is difficult to treat even with diet and exercise.

If you are bothered by an unwanted double chin, you’re in luck. At Gallaher Plastic Surgery & Spa MD, we offer several options to help you reduce the appearance of pesky submental fullness. After a full facial-evaluation and talking to you about your goals, one of our specialists will create an individualized plan to meet your desired results.

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is one of our favorite fat-reduction options. CoolSculpting is completely non-invasive and involves very little downtime. Targeted cryolipolysis technology freezes fat pockets deep below the surface of the skin while leaving surrounding tissue unharmed. The fat is naturally expelled from the body over time. CoolSculpting can be done in-office in as little as 1-hour. Initial results can be seen in as little as 4 weeks. Final results may take up to 3-6 months.

Kybella

Another great option for moderate to severe submental fullness is Kybella injections. Kybella is the first FDA-approved injectable specifically designed to destroy pockets of fat under the chin. After a topical numbing cream is applied, multiple deoxycholic acid-based micro-injections are meticulously applied by a skilled Kybella injector. Many patients can achieve their desired outcome in as few as 2 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. However, for more severe submental fullness, up to 6 treatments may be necessary.

Submental Liposuction

Liposuction may be a good choice for patients seeking a one-time procedure to lose their double chin. Submental liposuction can give you a more defined profile and jawline. Tiny incisions are made in the natural folds of the skin to minimize scarring. A small cannula tube is inserted into the incision and fat is removed through a gentle suction device. Because liposuction is a surgical procedure, it requires a longer recovery time of 4-6 weeks. However, results can be seen much quicker than less-invasive alternatives.

During your in-person consultation, one of our specialists will talk to you about all of your options in-depth and help you find the right treatment for your needs, desired results, and budget.
