Why Hyaluronic Acid Should be in Your Skincare Regimen!

Author: Amber Boone, Licensed Aesthetician and CoolSculpting Master

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) has many benefits as it’s a naturally occurring substance found in our bodies for hydrating our skin, body tissue and eyes. If there is one product that I recommend to every skincare client, it’s Hyaluronic Acid. This one can be a game-changer for your skin. As the saying goes, “your makeup is only as good as your skincare routine”. As we age our skin’s ability to retain hydration and the production of our own hyaluronic acid begins to decline. This is why adding a Hyaluronic Acid product to your skincare regimen is important. It’s like a drinking a glass of water for your skin, keeping it hydrated throughout the day.

HA plumps and hydrates the skin improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and provides immediate hydration. Your skin will look and feel smoother and softer after one application. Have you ever purchased the thickest moisturizer you could find only to be disappointed that your skin did not absorb it as you were expecting? It’s frustrating! This is because your skin is most likely dehydrated and lacking water rather than oil. HA provides hydration and a good moisturizer provides the oils that your skin needs. Two very different products that when combined give you beautiful results. Another bonus of HA is that it’s a moisture-binding ingredient that our bodies naturally produce so even the most sensitive skin types – including eczema, rosacea, oily and acne-prone skin – can use it. Everyone needs HA because as we age this is something that no matter how much water we drink, our skin needs a topical dose to help enhance our natural beauty and manage our skin’s hydration levels. Drinking water and eating healthy fruits and vegetables also cannot be overlooked for achieving and maintaining beautiful skin.

It’s important to note that HA does not replace a good moisturizer but what it does do is increase your skin’s ability to absorb and retain moisture. Use it before you put your moisturizer on. I have a feeling that once you try it, you’ll love it as much as I do! Pro tip: You can also wet your fingertips before applying for best results. My favorite Hyaluronic Acid products happen to be SkinMedica’s HA5 serum for my face and their HA5 Smooth & Plump Lip System for my lips.
