Submental Liposuction vs. Kybella: Which is best for you?

You work hard to take care of your appearance.  You eat a healthy diet, you work out, and you’ve been known to splurge on a few skincare products.  With all the effort you put into looking and feeling your best, it’s no wonder you feel annoyed – and a little dismayed – at the stubborn chin fat that will not go away! Fortunately, there are treatments out there that can help with chin fat. Two of the most popular procedures are submental liposuction and Kybella injections.  But when it comes down to it, which treatment is best for you?

Submental Lipo vs. Kybella

Submental liposuction is an invasive surgical procedure that allows a plastic surgeon to remove fat located around the chin area.  A small incision is made in the submental area then a small cannula is inserted to then suction out fat cells. Patients are then placed in a compression garment that fits around the face to minimize swelling. This procedure takes approximately one hour.

Kybella is a non-surgical procedure used to reduce chin fat. Kybella is an FDA-approved injection that uses deoxycholic acid to reduce submental fat.  With a series of 2-3 sessions, Kybella can decrease the appearance of a double chin, leading to a more contoured jawline.

Both treatments can be used to reduce fat located around and underneath the chin.  However, liposuction involves surgery and recovery, which can be difficult for patients with busy schedules.  Kybella treatments are fast, easy, and incredibly effective – the injection procedure only takes 30 minutes to perform, and ideal results can be seen within weeks.
Best of all? Both submental liposuction and Kybella results are long-lasting– once those fat cells are removed, they’re gone for good.
